Since I've been on an adult dystopian kick lately, I picked up this short serial, which I almost never do. I don't usually read "books" under 150 pages, I don't like cliffhangers unless all the books are available, and I'm pretty careful about new authors when there are literally no reviews. I have no idea what possessed me to pick up this book, but I have to say I'm glad I did.Though spare, the world-building was interesting in a future Chicago. Brodie Dunn is slowly unfolding the parameters of this new society in the remnants of an old place. Women are sparse, there are distinct haves (inside the wall) and have-nots (outside the wall). Inside the wall, men are born into a caste system that I am still trying to figure out. Outside, hunger and poverty are rampant, making all people desperate.
In the context of this world, wounded warrior Rhett is found outside the walls by Hope. Thinking to turn him over to the Outside leaders in return for food, Hope plunks him in a cart and rolls him to her container car home.
When Rhett wakes up, he is basically smothered by lust, despite his stoic warrior discipline and his inexperience. Hope is affected, too, so things move quickly. The word "erotic" is in the title, after all. However, I cannot stress enough that I found this brief serial story to be more tender than several of the full-length, dystopian romance novels published in the past year to great acclaim by more prolific and well-known authors.
"He didn't think of implications. He didn't think of the hundred ways in which the existence of a woman like Hope restructured the very laws of his universe. He held onto her and simply breathed."
I immediately picked up the second serial installment, and will be continuing with the rest. Gotta love Kindle Unlimited as a tool to try a new author.
